Spices play a vital role in human nutrition and the national economy. They add taste and flavor to food, possess medicinal properties, and bring out unique flavors. During the Late Middle Ages, common spices were imported into Western Europe annually. In the Middle Ages, spices were among the most sought-after and expensive products in Europe. Examples of common spices include pepper, cinnamon, cumin, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. Spices can be roots, bark, seeds, buds, or fruits, usually dried and available whole or ground. Most spices come from plants that thrive in tropical climates.
Activity-based learning about spices helped 5th-standard students discover various types of spices. They learned about the climate requirements for growing different spices and how spices impact the national economy.
